Ever since we watched Rosie whisk around the Skypad apartment of The Jetsons, we have all dreamed of having a robot to clean our homes.
Perhaps Rosie laid the foundation for an ingenious idea that would one day become reality.

Have a look at the best robot vacuum cleaners on our list below. There are plenty of options to choose from and if you’re not sure which one is right for your cleaning needs, we’ll help you compare and contrast the top models right here in our guide.
Kick back and let the robot do a little of the housework for you!
Why a Robot Vacuum
If you’re not 100% convinced that a robot vacuum is the right for you, then here are a few reasons that might change your mind:
- Schedule. Yes, we all know that it is convenient because you don’t have to manually push it around the floor, but another reason that it is convenient is because you can program it to clean whenever you want.
If you’re away at work all day and want to enjoy some peace and quiet when you come home, have the vacuum clean while you are away. Some of them can be a bit noisy, but if you program it to run while you’re away, the noise doesn’t matter!
- Reaching Under Furniture – No bending or stretching involved with this little vacuum. It reaches all of those hard places for you!
What It Can and Can’t Do
These little vacuums are handy, but you should understand what it is capable of doing and where it just won’t compare to a regular vacuum cleaner.
- It can… surface clean. It’s great at keeping the air cleaner in your home since it picks up the dust and fine particles as it passes over flooring and low-pile carpeting. It removes pet hair (and human hair) quickly and easily.
- It can’t… deep clean. If you have carpet, don’t expect the little robot to pick up the dirt that sinks down to the bottom of the carpet and remove it.
The suction power just isn’t strong enough.
If you have low-pile carpeting or rugs, then it will do a decent cleaning job on the surface, but they’re best for tile, laminate, wood and any other hard flooring surface.

How They Navigate
Robot vacuums are designed to make decisions for themselves and they require very little instruction from you as far as where and what to clean.
iRobot, for example, uses the AWARE system that uses multiple sensors to pick up the environmental data and then send it to the microprocessor which will tell the vacuum where to go. They also know when it’s time to head back to the charging station when the battery is low.
Different brands and models use slightly different technology, and as you’ll notice from our list, iRobot is currently the industry leader in the category.
They make the best robot vacuum cleaners in today’s market!
Virtual Barriers & Bumpers
You don’t want your robot vacuum to sail right out the open slider, across the deck and plop! fall into the pool?
We didn’t think so.
You can purchase virtual barriers or boundary markers for some robot vacuums to prevent them from entering certain rooms or areas, and if you’re worried that it might scratch or damage furniture that it bumps into, then you can add on a soft bumper that will help keep your furniture safe.
Since these are such specific products, it’s best to purchase replacements brushes and filters from the same manufacturer.
Avoid using universally designed products as you may risk damaging the unit.
Top 5 Best Robot Vacuum Reviews
The 595 model from iRobot is ideal for pet owners who are constantly battling pet hair and dander on the floors.
This features a three-stage cleaning system that features a spinning side brush that cleans along wall edges, counter rotating brushes on the bottom that pick up dirt and debris and the suction power that will send everything into the dust cup at the back.
You can either schedule the vacuum time or press the Clean button to have it begin cleaning immediately and it is full of iAdapt sensors that direct and navigate the vacuum to the right places in your home. You don’t have to worry about it falling off ledges or down stairs since it has cliff detection sensors!
This is a complete kit, along with vacuum, two virtual walls, AeroVac filters, brushes and cleaning tools.
Considering the amount of accessories that you get, the price is reasonable. If you are thinking of investing in a robot vacuum, this is the one to invest in.
There aren’t many differences between the 595 above and this 650 Robot Roomba. The previous model was designed for the needs of pet owners (the hair, dust and dander removal), but this model is just as effective at cleaning up the hair and dirt as the other one.
This features the same three-stage cleaning system, cliff detection and a scheduling option.
Let’s just say that this is the next generation of the product, with a slightly different appearance. It is more compact than the 595 above (only 3.6 inches high), but this doesn’t come with the virtual walls like the 595 does.
You save a bit of money purchasing this if you don’t need the virtual walls. Another great iRobot Roomba vac!
The 770 Roomba is different because it comes with a remote control so you can schedule it or turn it on for immediate cleaning.
Same great cleaning technology as the other two (it is about the same dimensions as the 650 model) and it offers you three different cleaning modes.
In the Clean mode, it will calculate the size of the room and adjusts the cleaning time appropriately.
In Spot mode, it will move in a spiral pattern (full diameter of around three feet) in order to provide a more thorough cleaning of a specific area.
The third is the Schedule mode.
Changing products, we also suggest the Neato Botvac D80.
The “D” in D80 is referring to the shape of this vacuum. You’ll notice that most other robot vacuums are round, but the D-shape of the Neato allows it to reach corners and other areas of the home more effectively.
It uses a laser mapping and navigation to understand where it needs to go and where it has been. The path that it chooses is designed to clean more quickly than other robot vacuums, which may pass over the same area numerous times, therefore spend more time cleaning than the Neato.
The brush system is similar to iRobot and it has excellent suction power for a robot vacuum.
Unlike the virtual wall system, this has boundary markers that you place on the floor to keep it out of desired areas. Some find this unsightly, but does allow you to create a more custom cleaning path. It also has cliff sensors so it won’t fall down the stairs.
Once nice feature is that once it’s done recharging, it will pick up where it left off vacuuming before it headed to the charging dock.
Well, technically this is a mop, but it is still a robot and it still cleans your floors, so we decided to include it anyways! Once you’re done using one of the vacuums on our list to pick up the hair and debris, why not have a robot mop finish the cleaning for you?
It uses a Northstar Navigation system that functions like a GPS, which tells it where it has already cleaned and where it hasn’t.
You can use this as a wet mop or for dry sweeping and with disposable cloths or microfiber cloths. You choose! It can sweep up to 1,000 square feet or mop up to 350 square feet in a single cleaning cycle, but if you purchase additional Northstar navigation cubes separately, you can cover up to around 2,000 square feet. Pretty impressive!
This is yet another great cleaning tool from iRobot that will allow you more free time to focus on more important things.
