Buyers Guide

Although the handheld steam cleaners are generally not as expensive as a full sized machine, they are still an important purchase. You should think carefully about a few things before committing to buy any appliance. Some of the things you should think about include

  • Practicality. You should consider whether the steam cleaner will do the main jobs you want it to do. A handheld steam cleaner is perfect for small jobs around the home such as cleaning around the faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, cleaning the oven or the BBQ grill. They are not designed for larger tasks such as cleaning floors or a whole room.
  • Water Capacity. Although these are smaller steam cleaners they do have various water tank sizes, obviously the bigger the tank the longer the cleaning time.
  • Accessories. As with full sized steam cleaners, there are a number of various attachments for different jobs around the home, some are ‘standard’ while others many vary from one cleaner to another.

5 Best Handheld Steam Cleaner Reviews

1. Vapamore MR-75 Amico

The Vapamore Handheld Steam Cleaner tops our chart in both quality and price. There is good reason for this, the Vapamore not only has the power to clean your house when you need it but it also comes with a limited lifetime warranty and has the largest assortment of accessories in the handheld steamer range. With attachments for tile grout cleaning, stove tops and ovens, BBQ grills, windows and mirrors and much more, this little machine will have your home hygienically clean in next to no time. There is an extension hose included to increase the reach of the steam cleaner and make your jobs even easier.

The Vapamore steam cleaner is a portable device, which means it is small and compact. This also means that the tank is considerably smaller than a full sized machine. The water takes only 4 minutes to heat up and gives approximately 10 minutes of continuous steam.

Its small size means that you can take the Vapamore handheld absolutely anywhere, from home to car, caravan, boat and anywhere else you might travel to. To make this even easier, Vapamore have included a very handy travel/storage bag so everything stays in one place and ready for use.

While the Vapamore is not the cheapest handheld steam cleaner, it is certainly the best in terms of performance. Definitely worth the extra cost when you consider the lifetime warranty.

2. Hoover Twin Tank WH20100

Hoover are well known for creating machines to clean your home and this Twin Tank Handheld Cleaner is no exception. Small and compact but with enough cleaning power to blast away grease and grime effectively.

The steam cleaner has a short heat up time, which is to be expected from a handheld, and a reasonable steam clean time. There are an assortment of attachments for every conceivable job around the home, including tiles and grout, shower screens and cubicles, bath tubs, faucets, stove tops and ovens. There are a number of jobs this little cleaner can tackle in the garden too, such as patio furniture, garden tools and BBQ grills as well as a handy bag for storage and travel.

The main feature of the Hoover Twin Tank is the twin tank system. This is provided to allow for an extra boost of hygiene with the Hoover disinfectant solution. The solution is in a separate tank to the water so you only use it when you want to and is excellent for kitchen worktops, dining tables, patio tables as well as children’s highchairs and toys.

While this goes against the main benefits of a steam cleaner (no harsh chemicals and no further cost) it can be reassuring to know that your family are protected from the bacteria lurking in your home. If you really don’t want to use the disinfectant, you will be reassured by the fact that the steam cleaner works just as effectively without it.

Cheaper to buy than the Vapamore and not quite as good, but for the price it is a good little steam cleaner with added bacteria busting power.

3. McCulloch MC1230

McCulloch manufacture a range of quality full sized steam cleaners, so it stands to reason that a handheld is added to the steam team. While the steam cleaner has been scaled down for the handheld, the quality remains the same throughout the range.

The McCulloch Handheld Steam Cleaner has a 6 ounce water tank and takes approximately 3 minutes to heat, giving 10 minutes of continuous steam. There is a trigger which controls the steam output for ease of use and safety, this also has a continuous steam lock.

There are 11 attachments included to help you power through jobs such as the stove top, oven, tile grout (both wall and floor), Shower screens and patio furniture. The steam cleaner is also useful for cleaning the car interior, wheels and engine as well as boats and motorhomes.

A nice little cleaner at a reasonable price but fewer attachments than the previous two, is it worth sending a little more money for a more versatile cleaner? Probably.

4. DBTech Pressurized Steam Cleaner

At number 4 in our chart is the DB Tech Multi-Purpose Pressurized Steam Cleaner and while this is by no means the worst steam cleaner, it is certainly not the best.

While the DB Tech Steam cleaner is advertised and named a pressurized cleaner, the pressure is somewhat of a problem. The pressure is very short lived, about 20 seconds of good pressure is all you get before having to let it build up again. Some people might expect this because the unit is small and compact, however this doesn’t fit well with the name.

As a steam cleaner it is effective, it produces steam and it does clean. There are a number of attachments but not as many as other steam cleaners, this could potentially limit the variety of jobs it can help you with. The one thing that makes this steamer stand out from the others is the fabric attachment, this is used for steaming wrinkles and creases out of clothing and curtains while they are hanging, particularly useful for more delicate fabrics which cannot be ironed.

This is by no means a bad steam cleaner, just not quite as versatile as others due to the fewer attachments.

5. Steamfast SF-210

Our last handheld steam cleaner review is the Steamfast Everyday Handheld Cleaner. Generally the cleaner works well, but has only 6 attachments which could be limiting. The power cord is a good length and the heat up time is only 3 minutes, because this is a handheld steam cleaner the water tank is small and gives approximately 8-10 minutes of steam. When the steam is released there is some quite significant noise which might frighten small children and pets, this might not be an issue with just this steam cleaner though.

This is a good unit for doing the small jobs around the home, those that take little time to complete, but for anything more you might want to look at something a little more costly and powerful.

Whichever you decide is the best handheld steam cleaner, please remember that you are working in close proximity to the unit and should always be careful to avoid scalds and injury.
